Hair Transplant Surgery
Having healthy hair is a major factor in good appearance and essential for self-confidence since it can also affect social life. There are many factors that impact the growth and strength of hair and some of these factors may also contribute to baldness. Statistics suggest that 1 in every 3 people will experience hair loss at some point in their lives. Hair transplantation is a microsurgical procedure performed under operating room conditions. So far it’s considered the most effective and permanent solution to baldness. With its advanced medical facilities and highly trained professionals in medical fields, Turkey is a hotspot for people seeking a solution to this problem.

FUE hair transplant surgery is rapidly growing in popularity. Stigma that has previously surrounded the treatment has gone, with an increase in helping to normalise this and other cosmetic procedures. Popularity has also increased thanks to technological advancements that have and shorter recovery times. FUE hair transplant costs have also steadied in recent years, providing more cost-conscious patients with the opportunity to undergo the treatment. But, what is a FUE hair transplant? How does it work? And what exactly does this hair restoration surgery involve? We’ll answer all of your questions below.
How Does FUE Hair Transplant Work?
Simply put, this procedure involves the transplantation of hair follicles from one area of the body to another. This may sound pretty complicated, however, it’s actually a relatively straightforward procedure. But, how does it work exactly?
Hair follicles grow in groups of 1-4 hairs, known commonly as grafts. The hair grafts that are taken from your donor area are resistant to a hormone that is thought to cause hair loss. Therefore, when your surgeon transplants these grafts to the recipient area, they retain the resistance to this hormone. During an FUE hair transplant, a surgeon will typically transplant anywhere between 500 and 5000 grafts. Significant success rates, reduced costs, and longer-lasting results have brought this treatment into the forefront of the plastic surgery world, with it now being considered one of the highest-quality procedures available.

Getting Ready for Your FUE Hair Transplant Surgery
No two hair restoration surgery's are ever identical. Yours will be specifically planned out based on your individual needs, preferences, and chosen clinic. However, there are a few main steps that are involved in the run-up to all FUE hair transplants. Below, we’ve outlined these steps so that you can gather together an idea of what’s involved in the planning of the procedure
1. Initial Consultation
First things first, we would like to get to know you! To ensure that you’re eligible for the treatment, we ask that you send us a few pictures of your head, from the top, front, left, right, and back. One of our Patient Managers will then be in touch to talk you through an initial assessment, depending on how many hair grafts you might need. Your Patient Manager will also go through some routine questions regarding your general health, including:
If you have any existing medical conditions.
If you take any medication on a regular basis.
When your hair loss started.
If hair loss is something that runs in your family.
This will allow your chosen doctor to understand the underlying reasons behind your hair loss, to ensure that the treatment is carried out in the best possible way. This assessment will also give us an initial indication of the potential cost of your FUE hair transplant. For more detailed information on cost, check out our hair transplant cost guide.
2. Planning Your Visit to the Clinic
Once you’ve got to know your Patient Manager and you’ve decided that you’re happy to go ahead with your treatment, we will begin to schedule a date for your surgery. We’ll work together with you on this, to make sure that your treatment is scheduled at a time and date that works well for you. If you decide to have your FUE hair transplant abroad, you’ll need to plan to fly at least one day before the surgery. This will give you time to rest and relax ahead of your treatment as the clinic will likely arrive early to pick you up on the day of your treatment.
3. On-Site Consultation With Your Doctor
You and your doctor will talk through your hair restoration treatment together. This is another opportunity to discuss what coverage you hope the surgery will achieve and your doctor will make a judgement on this based on the amount of hair in your donor area. Once you’ve both talked through this, your doctor will mark out what will be the beginning of your new hairline.
4. A Few Initial Checks and Tests
At the clinic, your treatment team will carry out some routine tests and checks, such as general blood tests, to ensure that you’re in good health and ready to start your procedure.
5. Preparing for Surgery
You’re now prepared and ready to get started with your FUE hair transplant. At this point, your treatment team will shave either your donor area or your entire head in preparation for the surgery. You’ll receive a local anesthetic from your treatment team which will numb your head for the duration of the surgery.
FUE Hair Transplant Surgery: Step-by-Step
You’re now through the preparation stage and are ready for your FUE hair transplant. Once you feel happy to proceed, your treatment team will begin your hair restoration procedure. Below, we’ve outlined a step-by-step breakdown of how a follicular unit extraction is performed.
1. Extracting the Grafts
Once your treatment team has got you comfortable and settled, you’ll receive a local anesthetic which will numb your head for the duration of the surgery. Your doctor can then proceed with your treatment. To start with, hair grafts are extracted one at a time — remember these are groups of 1-4 hair follicles. Once extracted, the grafts are placed in special storage solutions that maintain the grafts’ vitality.
2. Making the Incisions
After the required amount of grafts have been extracted, your treatment team will use microblades to create small incisions in which the hair grafts can be placed. These incisions determine the direction of hair growth and so your doctor will angle them in a consistent pattern, to ensure a natural look and density.
3. Implanting the Grafts
The next step is to insert the hair grafts into the bald or thinning area of your head. This typically takes a few hours and is performed on the same day as the previous two steps. During this stage, patients often pass the time by reading, watching TV or even taking a nap! Your treatment team will be there every step of the way and they’ll give you breaks during this implantation stage too.
Note: During this stage, it’s common for patients to also receive what’s known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment. This is often offered as a complementary treatment alongside an FUE hair transplant, as it promotes hair growth and helps with healing after your surgery. If you’re interested in finding out more about this, your Patient Manager will be happy to help, as well as provide you with more information about clinics who offer PRP.
4. Post-Operative Check-Up
After your FUE hair transplant, your treatment team will give you some painkillers to ease any soreness that you may have in the following days. If you’ve chosen to have your FUE hair transplant abroad, you’ll spend the night in accommodation nearby. The day after your treatment, you’ll meet up with your treatment team again for a post-op check-up. During this, your doctor will also give you some advice and instructions to follow in the following weeks.
What Should I Expect From My FUE Hair Transplant?
Once you’ve had your hair restoration treatment, you should see gradual hair growth on your previously bald or thinning area. Below, we’ve outlined a brief overview of what to expect, and when, after you’ve had your FUE hair transplant.
·The First Two Weeks After Treatment
You may find that your head is a little sore and tender during the first couple of weeks following your hair follicle transplant. It’s also likely that you’ll see visible scabbing, but this should gradually die down during the second week. If you notice that some hairs are falling out, don’t panic! This is a completely normal part of the process and these will grow again in the coming weeks.
During these weeks it’s likely that you’ll start to see what’s known as the 'shedding phase'. This is when up to 90% of your transplanted hair falls out. Again, don’t worry about this! The shedding process occurs in 95% of FUE hair transplant cases and it’s a natural, transient reaction to the hair restoration treatment. Your hair will gradually recover and grow back after this.
Your hair growth may be fairly slow between the second and fourth month after your treatment, with typical growth being around 5%. Between the fourth and six month though, you should begin to notice around 20%-25% of your new transplanted hair start to grow.
Between the sixth and ninth month, your transplanted hair should reach a growth level of around 75%. After the ninth month, your transplanted hair should continue to grow, typically the last 25%. However, it’s worth noting that in some cases it may take up to 18 months after your surgery to fully regain any hair in the crown area of your head
